Television Program
The Media Center includes a television studio that is used for student productions. Students can take Television Production, as an elective course in their students’ junior and senior years. The media center staff also sponsors a Film Club that meets on a monthly basis.
Television Class
The Mt. Hebron Television Class is a hands-on studio and lecture course, designed to provide a strong foundation to the basic skills and approaches to Television Production as well as an introduction to contemporary ideas and practices. The student will be able to identify intermediate editing techniques such as graphics, soundtracks, voice-overs, insert editing, shot selection, camera angles, script writing, and storyboarding. The student will also demonstrate the ability to produce projects using intermediate editing techniques.
Film Club
The Film Club consists of 22 students that meet on a monthly basis after school. We study the history of film, film theory, film genres, and production. The students produced videos for the Howard County Film Festival. We had four entries from the film club in 2014. One entry, produced by Sophia Betlejewski received first place recognition in the “Judges Choice” category.
Video Production Support for Individual Students or Classes
The media staff encourages curriculum classes to use their Television Studio facilities for video projects. Educational research shows that students who teach others benefit even more than the students being taught. Students making demonstration/instructional videos learn content more thoroughly, because describing a procedure or idea in a clear and lively way requires students to analyze and internalize what they intend to teach. Students learn to research content, outline ideas, write scripts, design storyboards, speak effectively, edit, interview experts, interact purposefully with others, manage time, take risks, and solve problems. All students can benefit from knowledge of the technology used in video production. This includes using digital video cameras, editing software, and learning from the integrated approach that video production involves.
